I'm a student at NYU Shanghai studying Ezra Pound's "translations" and all his idealisation of the Chinese ideology and culture, and it's a pleasure to read this post when working on my essay to be published. Inspired me a lot, especially the comparative analysis on the two versions of “采薇”. Translation is such an esoteric yet stimulating field to explore!Xiao Baihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16970372209307563524noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13974296645733775.post-65336163656006690592017-08-09T14:02:55.257-04:002017-08-09T14:02:55.257-04:00Thank you! Curious to see how this was done, I was pleasantly surprised to see a familiar name (I regularly lurk on your blog for updates).

The topic of this article is an important one and the dual language format is fitting given the topic it is covering. There are certain phrases that stuck out to my 8th grade level Chinese though. For example, early in the article there is one sentence "None of which, we should all pray, will amount to much". This was translated as "让我们一起祈祷这种种事端都不会造成后果". Anyway, not wanting to pick a stone out of an egg, just thought I would share it. Hope the Atlantic continues to experiment this format of reporting.

On a different note, I'm sure you are aware by now that there was an earthquake close to our hometown. Hope everyone your know is safe and sound.Babygrandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15693634821018850542noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13974296645733775.post-31889473959047044322016-12-20T12:13:15.296-05:002016-12-20T12:13:15.296-05:00Exactly!Exactly!Xujunhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05534267282303815433noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13974296645733775.post-26162429649535140772016-12-11T22:15:44.132-05:002016-12-11T22:15:44.132-05:00...and the skies are not cloudy all day.......and the skies are not cloudy all day....Jim Tnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13974296645733775.post-73608994060301467482016-11-17T22:31:02.264-05:002016-11-17T22:31:02.264-05:00It is refreshing to find a non-trump-supporting vo...It is refreshing to find a non-trump-supporting voice.a parenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04033332601438948427noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13974296645733775.post-70274643717876834382016-11-17T22:29:50.872-05:002016-11-17T22:29:50.872-05:00Agree with Hua's explanation.Agree with Hua's explanation.a parenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04033332601438948427noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13974296645733775.post-28519528435862001432016-11-11T22:55:40.222-05:002016-11-11T22:55:40.222-05:00Haha. They are easily entranced by the first thing they hear that sounded right.
The "pragmatic" Chinese are trained, ironically, through long reign of Chinese communism to be extremely selfish. Many, perhaps including myself occasionally, have very little regard for social responsibilities.
A blind worship of success. Especially the gaudy celebrity culture that is personified by Trump.
Do I sound like an urbane elite who have failed to understand other American? I guess you've read Kaiser Kuo's article on SupChina.com? I agree with most of his analysis, though I thought "first-generation" might not necessarily be the best way of categorizing. Age group and immigration time could be important factors. From what I saw around me: Trump supporters are mostly new immigrants (within 10 years) in the 30-40 age group, who have young (or no) children. In contrast, many in the older generation are influenced by their US college-educated children, who are generally liberal leaning.

What's your view?Xujunhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05534267282303815433noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13974296645733775.post-21248778738605216222016-11-09T18:52:31.723-05:002016-11-09T18:52:31.723-05:00Xujun, Do you understand why some many of the Chin...Xujun, Do you understand why some many of the Chinese here and in China entranced by Mr. Trump?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05777002852095654432noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13974296645733775.post-72979200849169203452016-07-04T12:19:52.939-04:002016-07-04T12:19:52.939-04:00A year already!
