Blog Rally to Help the Boston Globe

We have all read recently about the threat of possible closure faced by the Boston Globe. A number of Boston-based bloggers who care about the continued existence of the Globe have banded together in conducting a blog rally. We are simultaneously posting this paragraph to solicit your ideas of steps the Globe could take to improve its financial picture.

We view the Globe as an important community resource, and we think that lots of people in the region agree and might have creative ideas that might help in this situation. So, here's your chance. Please don't write with nasty comments and sarcasm: Use this forum for thoughtful and interesting steps you would recommend to the management that would improve readership, enhance the Globe's community presence, and make money. Who knows, someone here might come up with an idea that will work, or at least help. Thank you.

I have nothing against Boston Globe or any other newspapers, but like many other newspapers in the US, it is helping a dying business. Maybe they should change their business model or something.

It's depressing to see all the newspapers and magazines failing...especially when I'm looking for editing jobs. Over the last few months I got in the habit of clicking ads when reading news online--maybe those pennies will help them stay in business a few more hours.

Matthew, it is a very difficult time for editing jobs, but there may still be opportunities around. I'll send you an email.

Pug ster, I agree with you the Globe should consider a change in its business model. The most successful newspaper in the US is WSJ, perhaps the Globe should lean something from it. My own quibble about the Globe is that it pays little attention to the immigrant community, despite the fact there is a huge one in the Boston area. On the other hand, the immigrants are not likely subscribers either, so there is a dilemma.

Ironically, I think the problem with Boston Globe is that they have a good, perhaps too good of a website and most readers can get their information from the website rather than buying the paper version. They should have some exclusive content for or on paper print subscribers only.

As if the NYT cares about the opinion of bloggers? The only way bloggers can save the globe, is if each of the blogs involved in this project get 100 people to subscribe to the Globe. And even then we are talking a 50/50 chance the Globe will last 5 years.
